URBANDALE, IA – Annually the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce recognizes an outstanding citizen who has made an impact on the community. This year’s award winner, Doug Gulling, is a leader, mentor, devout volunteer, and advocate for community.
Doug, a 1975 graduate of Drake University, has been heavily involved in the Urbandale community for decades. He was named Chief Financial Officer of West Bank in 2001 with significant prior experience in public accounting and in various leadership roles with other financial institutions, including ten years with the Brenton Bank organization. The West Bank Corporation Foundation was established in 2003 as a result of Doug’s advocacy and has granted in excess of $5 million to community nonprofits to date, including many located in and benefiting the citizens of Urbandale.
Doug was elected to the Urbandale Community School Board in 2004 and served as President; he also served as President of the Board of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, overseeing major fundraising efforts that resulted in the world-class facility it is today. His leadership, community service, and significant contributions to the financial community culminated in his recognition as the 2013 Deloitte CFO of the Year.
Following his retirement as CFO in 2021, Doug continues to serve on the Board of Directors of West Bank and its parent company. Doug and his wife, Judy, raised their two daughters in Urbandale.
The Urbandale Chamber of Commerce will formally award Doug as Citizen of the Year at the annual Sample Urbandale, A Celebration of Business on Thursday, September 21st.
