beesEducation is truly the foundation of life in Urbandale, as nearly 44% of residents have a four-year degree or higher. The community offers a wide range of educational options for K-12, as residents can choose from a total of six public school districts and two private schools within the city limits (Des Moines Christian and St. Pius X Catholic School). This includes five public high schools in addition to Urbandale High School and Metro West Learning Academy. Two private high schools are also available such as, Des Moines Christian in Urbandale, and Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines.

The Urbandale Community School District has approximately 3,900 students in six elementary schools, one middle school and one comprehensive high school. In 2009, the construction of a new high school was completed that included a new Performing Arts Center and outdoor athletic/activity facility, complete with artificial turf and an all-weather track for football, band, track and soccer.  Webster Elementary was built in 2006 with an addition completed in 2012.  Urbandale Middle School’s remodeling and addition were completed in 2012, nearly doubling the learning space for students.  The District offers pre-school for 3-and 4-year-olds, full day kindergarten, and boasts a nationally-certified childcare program for before/after school and summer care for students in preschool through elementary school  Urbandale High School offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes 20 courses for dual enrollment, eligible for college credit at no cost to parents.  In addition, Urbandale offers students 28 “Career Pathys” available through DMACC and Central Campus for which college credit is also available.  The average ACT score in Urbandale is 22.6.  The district graduation rate is 90.2 percent compared to the state average of 88.8 percent.  The district is accredited by the Iowa Department of Education and multiple programs in all of the schools have been recognized at one time or another with the First in the Nation (FINE) award.
